Wayfinding Design and Identity for Artist Studios
The Artist Studios houses a group of talented creatives in the stables at Hylands Estate in Essex. Hylands Estate commissioned Inscribe to help increase the awareness of studios as many of the estate’s visitors are unaware of the studios. We developed a new brand identity, signage and wayfinding to give a more substantial presence and vibrant environment.

The problem
Lack of wayfinding
The Artist Studios is a hidden gem, housed in the period surroundings of the Hylands Estate stables and home to a talented collection of creatives. Hylands Estate has a large footfall of local and national visitors, with a large percentage of visitors unaware of the creative hub. Inscribe were tasked to increase the awareness of the artist studios and encourage more visitors to explore the creative spaces.
Our Solution
Modern Bold Wayfinding Design
We carried out several site visits to understand the visitor journey. We gained valuable insights from the client, visitors, and creative residents, enabling us to understand the potential barriers for visitors. The studios lacked a sense of presence, and existing wayfinding was not cohesive or clear. Entrances to the studios were not distinct and did not feel welcoming or inviting.
We proposed an innovative brand identity to give the studios prominence and create a beacon for creatives. The brand identity designed allowed the creatives to express their creative talent while ensuring communication and promotion was consistent.
We designed the signage and wayfinding to captivate the visitor’s attention and create a bold, identifiable brand. The bold colourways and graphics created vibrant, welcoming entrances and made wayfinding clear and distinct for all visitors.
Result
The new signage has had a dramatic impact on the space, creating an energetic environment which has increased the number of visitors exploring the studios and interacting with the creatives. The resident creatives are incredibly pleased with the new identity, feeling re-invigorated, which in turn has encouraged them to be more active in the promotion of studios.
